YOUNG DAVID, aka Dave Young, chose his artist name as
a reminder of what it said on his office door before
he took some 'time out' in the summer of 2006. Swapping
the office for what an estate agent might describe as
a 'cosy' basement studio in Stockholm, he now sits around
making beats all day as well as producing for other
artists and composing for TV and cinema to help pay
the bills.
Music has been a way of life ever since the young Young
David picked up a violin, aged six, and has taken up
most of his spare time since then. Having played piano,
keyboards and guitar in various groups, including a
jazz orchestra and a 10-piece soul band, Dave might
have continued along the semi-professional path if it
weren't for computers. But after the ups and downs of
making studio demo tapes in the early 1990s, the feeling
of liberation that came with being able to make it sound
like a record at home was too good not to hold on to.
With endless evenings and weekends spent honing production
skills, one of the best things about going full-time
has been the freedom to work with other artists and
musicians, even at 3 o'clock on a dark Tuesday afternoon.
And the long Swedish winters have certainly been put
to good effect. Breaking through in 2007 with remixes
for Prima Donna on Dave Seaman's Audio Therapy label
and (out soon in 2008) Butti 49 on Exceptional Records,
Young David has gathered support for his own tracks
from Simon Harrison (Basic Soul), Beyond Jazz and Paddy
Freeform who snapped up four of them for his trail-blazing
Universal Vibes label.
About the upcoming EP: it's house but not as we know
it, bridging the gap between soulful and minimal and
blending crunchy mid-tempo party beats with intoxicating
two-tone, jazz and dub flavours. Equally at home on
the dance floor, ipod or lounge stereo, the tracks have
a sense of space and depth and, above all, a real musicality
which comes not (only) from the pushing of a few buttons,
but from a lifelong quest. To be continued.
