Looking back on the myriad of ways that the genre now known quite loosely as ‘bass music’ has mutated, one of the key figures in its evolution would have to be Bristol’s Rob Ellis, better known simply as Pinch. His fascination with what the outer limits of the dub sound can achieve, has made him a distinct figure within the fluid group of like-minded dubstep musicians that defined the so-called Bristol sound. In 2003, a Kode9 set at London’s seminal FWD>> became the stepping-stone into dubstep that inspired him to start the first pure dubstep night outside of FWD>>, Subloaded, in his hometown. With the city’s love of dub and long musical lineage, plus Pinch’s dedication to the importance of the actual sound, it quickly formed a dedicated community and became a yardstick by which other nascent events were measured. This had all been driven by a key moment in his own musical evolution which as he explains, “I lost interest in D&B and started buying minimal Basic Channel style techno, garage, grime and electronica instead - trying to mix them up together,” pre-empting the dominant sound of 4/4 dub-techno embraced by today’s crop of young producers, like Hessle Audio, who regularly cite the Bristol sound as a big influence. This embrace of a starker, dubbier sound became the seed from where his Tectonic label grew, and by championing artists like 2562, led to his eventual release of work with dub legend and King Tubby apprentice, Scientist. His FABRICLIVE offering comes hot on the heels of mixes from Pearson Sound and an artist with whom he’s just recently released a collaborative album on Honest Jon’s, Shackleton. These are all producers who work in a similar vein, that is, impeccable attention to sound detail, continual experimentation with rhythm whilst always maintaining a definitive ‘sound’ which can be traced throughout all their productions.
The mix itself combines all of Pinch’s loves, a blend of both melodic mood-pieces, driving dub-techno and the odd mid-range bass wobble masterfully planted to maximum effect. This is all peppered through in post-production with little vocal samples, mostly supplied by Bristol MC Jakes, that fully form the mix, like the grain in wood, supplying body, making it more than just a sum of its constituent parts. Pinch kicks things off somewhere through a Distal production, a screwed hip-hop vocal making it sound like a paranoiac’s reimagining of ghetto-tech. This quickly sets the tone - managing to juggle the ominous with the upfront, like the Lynchian strings of ‘In Dreams’ which phase seamlessly into the manic energy of Boddika and Joy O’s recent smash ‘Swims’. The mix really clips along, testament to Pinch’s skill behind the decks, most tracks only playing out for a couple of minutes at most. There’s a nod to the pure dub-techno of Basic Channel, with a cut from Shed’s side-project EQD, mastered at that other altar to all things bass, Berlin’s Hard Wax. This drives into another major influence, with Pinch’s own remix adding some rolling sine-waves to the guttural vocals of Prince Green on Henry & Louis& neo-dub. A sledgehammer wobble both heralds, and ends, the central section of the mix, with Pinch’s collaborative effort with Photek, and Chestplate boss Distance’s weighty ‘Blue Meanie’. This central nub almost functions as a showcase, Pinch demonstrating some of contemporary dubstep’s many flavours: the industrial sounds of Emika, Roska’s clattering drums, Addison Groove’s use of repeating vocals as a rhythmic weapon and the shimmering techy keys of Goth Trad. The final two tracks are supplied by a couple of the most promising young producers to emerge in the past few years, Londoner OM Unit and Tectonic’s own Illum Sphere. ‘Pressure’ certainly doesn’t let up, presenting us with a relentless squiggling synth-line awash in a storm of feedback then changing tack considerably into a steady pulsing beat. Pinch often talks of psychedelic dub, and here Illum Sphere demonstrates it wonderfully, toeing the line between instrumental breakbeats and even deep house, with its ethnic drums, distorted strings and a pitched down warble. This isn’t the true end as the mix is bookended with the rest of Distal’s track in order to achieve a perfect circularity as Pinch explains.
“I am a supporter of the sound of vinyl and the cultural associations I make with this format so it was important to me - even if I do ultimately end up abandoning my beloved format one day - to stick by my guns and record the mix like this. I also made the whole mix start and finish in the same spot - meaning that the entire DJ mix can work as a loop if you put it on repeat. I really like the idea of certain kinds of music existing in its own infinite context and setting up the mix to loop like that was playing entirely into that idea.” - Pinch 2011 |

Just a guy who discovered doing music is the perfect excuse for partying every weekend and not having a real job? Hardly.
Already when being a teenager, living far out in the german countryside, Andre Crom got intrigued by House and Techno as an exciting and irresistible escape from the boring surrounding he faced. Mid-90ies-dance and house left a strong mark on his taste which prevails until today....
The call of music led Andre into a career in electronic music spanning over 10 years, starting out as journalist interviewing heroes like Masters At Work or Mel Cheren of West End Records, continuing as booker and developing his dj skills at countless of gigs.
In 2008 Andre Crom finally moved to Berlin and since then works fulltime as labelmanager, music producer and dj.
His label „OFF Recordings“ belongs to the most popular imprints of its kind, its releases getting good feedback and plays from virtually any dj with a taste for good house music and regularly entering high chart positions in the leading vinyl & digital stores; „OFF SPIN 03 – Thyladomid – The Voice“ held the Beatport Deehouse Chart # 1 position for many weeks to name just one example.
Crom's coproductions with Martin Dawson „Gonna Be Alright“, „In the City“ or „About You“ were instant hits on Decks, Beatport and Resident Advisor as well.
However, Andre Crom's love for house music becomes most evident on his gigs, playing a mixture of own productions, hard-to-find oldschool gems and carefully picked current releases, always groovy and 100% focused on the floor. |

The music of Mark E is overwhelmingly deliberate, and in that sense it’s quintessential house—
unswerving, mechanistic, intoxicatingly simple. And life imitates art: the Wolverhampton-reared,
Birmingham-based DJ/producer has had a slow, steady ascension to his status as one of the genre’s
most natural talents.
Mark E’s love affair with electronic dance music began began early, as an adolescent, when
Manchester was Madchester and the irreverent attitude of rave culture swept through England. His
first record? Bizarre Inc’s exuberant, piano-loaded “Playing With Knives,” a fortuitous introduction
to the hypnotizing powers of house. As Mark got older, he dove headfirst into the surprisingly
fertile Wolverhampton scene, tasting house at the hands of legends like John Kelly and Frankie
Knuckles before a move to Birmingham for University also installed him in a larger club scene.
Mark’s first forays into production were, naturally, edits—warm, understated, and interestingly
mellow, with tempos hovering somewhere between 105 and 115 BPM. (Or thereabouts.) Once
“Scared,” a ten-minute rework of Womack & Womack’s “Baby, I’m Scared Of You,” found the ears
of influential selector (and, more importantly, BBC radio DJ) Giles Peterson, it was on, and a solid
string of memorable, vinyl-only releases introduced the world at large to this humble, devoted
househead. Slowly (again), Mark went beyond edits and into original production, starting his own
label, MERC, and honing a sound that was uniquely blue collar and utilitarian—classic, almost
industrial house, with a tinge of disco warmth.
A stellar remix for Matthew Dear’s “Little People (Black City)” introduced him to the Ghostly/
Spectral fold, who are now releasing his first artist album, Stone Breaker. It’s as defining as anything
he’s done, a symbol of his unique spot in the global club music landscape, sounding simultaneously
familiar and unique like few others can.

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined" - Henry Thoreau.
Wez Saunders Lives Music. So much so, that he did what not many others would do and gave up a secure job to do something that he loves. Driven by success and the tragic and untimely Death of his soul-mate & younger Brother to Leukaemia in June 2008, Wez Saunders has re-found inspiration - in Music.
A true lover of all things House Music, Endemic Digital & Unrivaled Music boss Wez Saunders has consistently moved through music technology with the times, and tried with moderate success under several alias’ - and finally found who he is musically - himself.
Wez Saunders is a DJ, producer, remixer, Label Manager and Booking Agent who has had 16+ years of moderate success with previous alias' Humungo 242 (remixing for Pink, Uncle 22, DJ Trust), Samian Pourne and more recently The Hat, from Kita & The Hat (The Gallery, Twilo, Ministry of Sound, Pacha).
He originally shared belt-drive decks from the age of 14 with his 11 year old bro, spent the 90's progressing through the musical journey of Old Skool, Hardcore, Jungle, Drum n Bass, Dance, House, Speed Garage and Trance .... finally settled into the Progressive House scene with a pair of Technics 1200's, spending a small mortgage on records, trying to make it as a Prog DJ. This expanded into Deep House & Tech House, and now Wez Saunders likes to call himself a "House DJ" because he can play the first or last set of the night, and be sure not to disappoint.
Nowadays, accompanied with his Macbook Pro, Ableton Live or Traktor Scratch Pro, a VCM 100, Traktor X1 Controller and 40 CD's, this ever-so-friendly guy is always ready to provide the right grooves to his audience, whatever the hour.
As a DJ, Wez Saunders, under various alias’ has played for, or been booked to play for The Gallery, Wonderland, Twilo, Electronic Sessions, London Rocks, Entwinement, Twisted Energy, Festas de Praia, DV.FM, Insomnia FM, Sideways Radio Show, Electronic Groove, The Clubland Guide (Scotland - with National Newspaper coverage), Proton Radio, plus more at venues such as the Ministry of Sound (London), Pacha (London), Road Trip (London), The Bomb (Nottingham), Zoo Project (Ibiza), Linekers Bar (Ibiza), Linekers Boat Party (Ibiza), Space (Ibiza), Cafe Mambo (Ibiza), Bar M (Ibiza), and Dreamzone (Azores, Portugal).
In 2010 alone, Wez Saunders under various alias’ has played alongside, been booked to play alongside or at events with the following DJ’s (just a sample of DJ’s, in alphabetical order) - 16 Bit Lolitas, Alex Kenji, Ali Wilson, Hernan Cattaneo, James Talk, Jon O’Bir, Marcus Schulz, Mark “Toolroom” Knights, Nic Fanciulli, Nicka, Nicole Moudaber, Paolo Mojo, Ridney, Sergei Shkuroff, Steve Richards, The Viceroy, Timo Garcia and more.
On his Endemic Digital Sessions radio show, (running since August 2010) hosted & produced by Wez Saunders on Twisted Energy, he has booked guests on the show including Colin Dale, The Scumfrog, Chris Fortier, Lenny Fontana, Gavyn Mytchel, Sasha Le Monnier, Joelle Atkins, Dzeta N Basile, Jose Nunez, Ryan Luciano, Trafik and more.
As Label Manager of Endemic Digital & Unrivaled Music, Wez Saunders boasts a roster of artists that include Onionz (whose hit "Space Bass" featured on Carl Cox latest Global Underground compilation), Phil Thompson aka Moonface, Colin Dale, Justin Steel, Echofusion, Greg Mak, Abyss, Rocky (X-Press 2), Terry Farley, Jim Masters, Tom Budden, Chris Fortier, JT Donaldson, Joe Pettersen, Omid S, Jose Nunez and more.
As a Producer, Wez Saunders has worked with James Talk, Ryan Luciano, MICC, Terry Farley & Rocky (pres. The Cobra), had tracks supported by Brandon Block, Ferry Corsten, Flash Brothers, Gavyn Mytchel, Graham Gold, Hernan Cattaneo, Jim Rivers, Jimmy Van M, Liluca, Luciano, Luke Fair, Matt Darey, Sasha Le Monnier, Spesh, Tiesto, Tini Tun and many more .... as well has signing tracks and remixes to Stripped Digital, Baroque, Dbeatzion Records, House of 23rd, Koothoomi Records, and remixes planned with Stylus Recordings, Perr-vurt Records and Plastik Philosophy, and his own labels.
And finally as a Booking Agent, Wez Saunders will be representing Lenny Fontana & The Scumfrog in the UK in 2011, as well as operating as a booking agency for artists under his label rosters.
Wez's plans do not stop there! "I've been working on the 2010 strategy since August (2010)" he says with a grin. "I'm quite excited actually at some of the discussions I am having at the moment. I don't want to say too much as I've been burned before by getting carried away too soon, but one thing I can say is that I am working with Dan Oliver & Kube 72 who also had a hit on a Carl Cox album this Summer (on Space Revolutions) about creating two offshoot labels - one Techno, and one Nu-Disco. The target audience and markets are completely different to those of Endemic Digital & Unrivaled Music so it will be an interesting side project but something that would complete my musical spectrum (as a Label Owner & DJ). But first and foremost my priority remains to deliver the type of quality on Endemic (Digital) and Unrivaled (Music) that our 'fans' are used to." |
