The latest release on universal vibes comes from London based DJ/producer, Darko and the the Strange worlds collective Strange Worlds first release is with Universal Vibes is in fact a mile stone. Simplicity is the operative word best to describe this release. The over sexed sax solo of Sexaphone (a one take wonder performed by Ben Hadwen) takes house music to a new level, whilst Danote on the other hand reflects on the hypnotic repetitive hook. deep techy house music at its best.
EXCLUSIVE TO THE ITHINK STORE: buy the full release and get two free live versions of Danote, recorded at the launch event and after party in London a few weeks ago, which add extra bite and smoothness and take the track in different directions... n.b the live versions are only available as part of the release package, however the main tracks can be bought individually.
UNIVERSAL VIBES PRESENTS: THIS IS WHAT THE UNIVERSE SOUNDS LIKE pt 1 mixed and selected by Paddy Freeform
Universal Vibes is proud to present its first label compilation, a retrospective looking back at their first year of digital and vinyl releases and also previewing a few new faces and forthcoming releases.
Universal Vibes was set up as an internet radio station by Paddy Freeform in 2002 as a platform for some of the styles of music which he felt were under-represented, both on the internet and in the music industry in general. This has given the site its' freestyle music policy, taking in broken beats, dubstep, deep house, techno, hip hop, funk, soul, disco and all points between. A sound described by Paddy himself as Future Soul Music for the dance floor – a sound you can find in his DJ sets all over London (at his regular residencies) and at events such as Secret Garden, Bloom, Bestival, Snowbombing and the Lake Of Stars in Malawi. A sound broadcast weekly on SSRadio and in Paddy's podcast series.
Since re-locating to London and the site has gone from strength to strength, Universal Vibes and has featured regular contributions from Freerange, Buzzin Fly, Fabric,Compost Records and has included guest appearances from many well known artists, including The Unabombers, Oris Jay, J Da Flex, Bugz In The Attic, Alex Attias, Ame, Mad Mats and many more. The logical progression of this was to start a label to release some of the music that was catching Paddy's attention as a DJ and radio broadcaster. Taking the same freestyle ethos as the site, the label music policy can only be described as eclectic and we've released everything from House and Balearic disco infused beats to downbeat leftfield material…basically if its deep and soulful and catches the ear, we'll release it!
Universal Vibes have always been about breaking new talent and bringing new music to the fore, so most of the names on the album won't be immediately recognisible, however we firmly believe that giving the right exposure and releasing these artists music will soon change that. Just remember where you heard them first! Featuring on this up and coming album we showcase music from Surra, Andy Ash, Poussez, Jafar and Bobby Strobe, The Onas, Strange Worlds, Jaffasurfa and Young David. Label head honcho Paddy Freeform will be getting involved and producing a few exclusive re-edits and remixes under his Soulsonix production alias as well as mixing the CD, whilst lining up his own productions for release later in the year.
'This Is What The Universe Sounds Like part 1' rounds up the deep dancefloor side of the label's output and will be released on CD (mixed) and digital (unmixed) 18 th May 2009, with a couple of 12' samplers released in march - featuring some of the tracks which are exclusive to the album.
Part 2 will feature the more downbeat, laid back sounds and will be released later in the year.
Young David picks up from where he left off with last year's debut /FuJi EP/ on Universal Vibes – mid-tempo deep house with soul flavours and a liberal pinch of Scandi out-thereness that saw heavyweight support from the likes of Domu, Robert Owens and Laurent Garnier, to name but a few.
'*Bubble*' features re-amped house pianos, dissected guitars, dissonant pads and of course those trademark peculiar bubbling sounds...
'*Over Again*' drops the tempo into proper slo-mo territory, starting with cosmic synths and an off-kilter sequence that have you thinking space disco until the bass drops, nailing modern boogie colours to the mast. Grainy tron flutes and strings add a tinge of melancholy that builds into the most haunting Rhodes melody you'll hear all year.
*Suade* (Adapted Vinyl) brings the full force of his analogue firepower to bear on '*Duh*' with a slightly harder and techier version of the original (from the /FuJi EP/) that will no doubt find favour once again with the deep- and tech-house heads.
Suade also adds his sonic touch as mix engineer Paddy Freeform's 'Soulsonics' mix of lead track Bubble

Broken Remixes
by Strange Worlds Soundsystem feat. Natasha Grujicic
Another artist premiered on the Album and 12' sampler, Liverpool's Andy Ash drops a full EP for the label
Astro Travellin' features on the second ‘This Is What the Universe Sounds Like' Vinyl sampler and get a great response from promo, so we wanted to follow it up with more material from Andy, and the resulting EP will not disappoint.
First up we have the title track, ‘Astro Travellin', a shimmering midtempo groove that will ignite the dancefloor despite its slow pace, steadily building and dropping in all the right places
Next up we slightly up the tempo and bring you the deep sublime grooves of ‘Going Down', a hypnotic vocal refrain nuzzles up alongside a solid groove and warm guitar licks for a proper summer track, will sound great on the terraces, in the fields and on the beaches over the coming months.
We follow this with Paracosm, again upping the tempo and cut from a slightly more electronic cloth, more of a bumping house groove but still retaining the same warmth and depth of sound
Finally we have Raindance, retaining the same deep and bumping house not house sound, an upping the tempo slightly again to reach the climax of a quality EP…
ANDY ASH BIOG
Andy Ash first began producing and DJing in his early teens, taking inspiration from house producers and DJ's such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Carl Craig and a whole host of others. Influenced from listening to DJ's such as these from an early age Andy has been digging into different sounds from across the musical spectrum in order to create his own blend of disco, house, techno and anything else that fits.
In both Andy Ash 's productions and DJ sets now, the influences are clear: the vibe of Madlib and the Mizells and the expression of Theo and Coltrane. Learning the lessons taught by these greats while filtering it through his own misspent musical youth makes for a refreshing sound that always has at least one foot on the dancefloor.
Still in his early twenties, Andy has a bright future on the eclectic side of things.
Andy has recently begun to release his own blend of house and disco with a double 12” on Chicago's Stillove4music, several releases on Five20East records and this forthcoming release for Universal Vibes.
After appearing on the Universal Vibes label compilation and vinyl sampler with deep house bomb Here I Am, Hungarian artist Jaffa Surfa steps up to deliver an ep of deep electronic house music.
Here I Am was on the first vinyl sampler and received some amazing feedback, warm chords, heavy production and chopped up vocals combine in a heady groove that will flood the dancefloor with warm soulful waves.
This is followed by Rootz, a slightly old school groove brought right up to date, again oozing warmth from its electronic heart …proper deep house music
Finally we have Shecago, again old school in its sound but thoroughly modern in its groove and production, with a slightly mellower feel than the other tracks.
Three tracks of deep, electronic soulful house music from an artist we predict big things for…will appeal to fans of labels like Freerange, Buzzin' Fy and Urban Torque, and lovers of proper deep house music…
JAFFA SURFA BIOG
Zee (aka. jaffa surfa)
The 27 year old young man got in serious touch with the turntables and dj-ing in 1999. Before that, at the age of 15 he played guitars, drums and the keyboards in a small bandLater he was hooked on chicago house and early dubby techno soundz, and started to collect cassettes and vinyl.
In the beginning he played techno, house, tribal, epic-house tracks, but nowadays we can find from nujazz through deep & chicago house to fresh minimal funk and hypnotic techhouse sounds in his sets.In 2001 he was the winner of the Check Magazine bedroom dj contest and earned the second place at Red Bull Master Of Music dj championship in 2004 from the 317 competitors with his 3 turntable set.
Since 2002 Zee has been a resident dj at ROXY CLUB and was the editor and broadcaster at ALISCA GROOVE 91.1FM radio from 2002 to 2004. His own parties called *audiodelight special* are successful and beloved all over the country in the underground house scene. Along with Gergely Tar they have a unique live set with percussions, decks, bass, FX and sometimes live vocalists. As well as this he tours the whole country and Europe with his dj sets. Zee is one of the few real selectors who are universal but unique in the dj booth with his amazing warm ups, groovy peak time and crazy afterparty sets.
Since 2006 Zee has been producing his own tracks. His releases are signed on labels like Devoted, Irma, Universal Vibes and C-Audio.
Being a real vinyl junkie he still supports and playes wax and collects all good music on physical releases.
Zee has played at Hungary's best clubs, events, festivals and in some European countries too like Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Romania etc.

After 2 years of running the label, we've broke several new artists and brought a whole host of new music to the fore, so we thought it was about time we released our first label compilation. Universal Vibes presents our first label compilation, representing a snapshot of our output for the first year and also dropping in a couple of exclusives and previews of forthcoming materal
"This is What The Universe Sounds Like' ,our first label compilation is in fact coming out in 2 parts, part 1 represents the deep dancefloor side of Universal Vibes, featuring a selection of the digital releases alsongside some exclusive remixes and new tracks....released april 09, part 2 featuring the more downbeat sounds will be out later in the year...
The vinyl sampler presents a couple of new tracks that will see a full single release in the next couple of months and welcomes 2 new artists to the label, Andy Ash and Jaffasurfa...and also features a couple of remixes by label head Paddy Freeform under his 'Soulsonix' production guise
The first release for 2009 on universal vibes welcomes to new artists to the label, going under the name keep the secrets…
After a long history of musical trial and error, John Renfrow and Deric Jones decided that it was time to take a different direction in their musical vision. It started two years ago with a simple beat and a slow jazz guitar, and soon developed into an eclectic fusion of musical expression. Each note ebbs and flows with hints of many different styles and genres. Both members of Keep the Secrets have found level ground in creating a sound that ambitiously exceeds the musical standards of today, and have vowed to honor their dreams by releasing songs that they love.
When we heard these two tracks, we had to sign them up, with a definite Balearic vibe running right through they compliment our output perfectly while adding a new stylistic angle. Label head Paddy Freeform also got his hand on the tracks and completed two edits which stretch the tracks out into dancefloor heaven
YOUNG DAVID, aka Dave Young, chose his artist name as a reminder of what it said on his office door before he took some 'time out' in the summer of 2006. Swapping the office for what an estate agent might describe as a 'cosy' basement studio in Stockholm, he now sits around making beats all day as well as producing for other artists and composing for TV and cinema to help pay the bills.
Music has been a way of life ever since the young Young David picked up a violin, aged six, and has taken up most of his spare time since then. Having played piano, keyboards and guitar in various groups, including a jazz orchestra and a 10-piece soul band, Dave might have continued along the semi-professional path if it weren't for computers. But after the ups and downs of making studio demo tapes in the early 1990s, the feeling of liberation that came with being able to make it sound like a record at home was too good not to hold on to.
With endless evenings and weekends spent honing production skills, one of the best things about going full-time has been the freedom to work with other artists and musicians, even at 3 o'clock on a dark Tuesday afternoon. And the long Swedish winters have certainly been put to good effect. Breaking through in 2007 with remixes for Prima Donna on Dave Seaman's Audio Therapy label and (out soon in 2008) Butti 49 on Exceptional Records, Young David has gathered support for his own tracks from Simon Harrison (Basic Soul), Beyond Jazz and Paddy Freeform who snapped up four of them for his trail-blazing Universal Vibes label.
About the upcoming EP: it's house but not as we know it, bridging the gap between soulful and minimal and blending crunchy mid-tempo party beats with intoxicating two-tone, jazz and dub flavours. Equally at home on the dance floor, ipod or lounge stereo, the tracks have a sense of space and depth and, above all, a real musicality which comes not (only) from the pushing of a few buttons, but from a lifelong quest. To be continued.
Ok_Ma break out into summer with a jump up 4/4 Crunked up party anthem, 'Boogle'.
Younglee and Jake Sax bust out some heavy bassline action accompanied by rough neck beats and broken horn licks infused with a reggae vibe that will guarantee intense dancefloor action .
Graced by the vocal talents of SL (Stuey Love) who is joined by South London's Nori it's a mantra for Boogie and Bogle. SL a regular Ok_Ma vocaist who featured on their last single 'International Journey', (supported by the likes of Mad Matts, Dom Servini, Domu, I.G Culture, The Unabombers and many more) breaks out with his unique lyrical flow.
Boogle follows on from Ok_Ma's previous single releases on R2, Still Music and Sick Trumpet those familiar with their unique raw London sound will not be disappointed.
A heavy remix comes from New York's uber talented Yellowtail who grabs Boogle by the throat and smashes it to pieces. Grimey, Broken funk New York style.
Ok_Ma are Younglee and Jake Sax. They met whilst playing as part of D'Nell at Manchester's Electric Chair, they shared the hotel room a few bottles of Jack Daniels....the Ok_Ma project was formed. Jake joined Young at his DJ gigs playing sax and flute over Young's beats a firm musical partnership was formed. Featuring various vocalists, this project is a a fusion of funk, soul, RnB and Afro / Broken rubs, global influence with a UK sound. With releases on London's R2 records, Liverpool's Sick Trumpet and Chicago's Still music and remixes for Arch_Type, Patchworks, Yellowtail, Jonny Miller, Choi, Tim Scott, Fred Wesley, Bernard Wright and featured on compilations from Philly, South Africa, Australia and Germany.
Continuing in our quest to break some new ground and bring some new sounds to the fore, universal vibes presents The Onaz....Standing out from the crowd, with a bit of a unique sound and outlook, The Onaz is a new artist who we think fits right in with the leftfield vibe we are going for with the universal vibes label...
The Onaz aka James Hadfield was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in the summer of 1981, the name "The Onaz" came from a period in his life where he was a graffiti writer smashing up streets, tracksides and public transport with 3D art, psyched up with the agression of early metalheadz;- Ruffage Cru, Photek, and Source Direct.
Growing up with Douglas McAvoy and Malcolm Sharp of Craggz and Parallel Forces, it didn't take long to start getting into the Drum and Bass genre a little deeper. The Onaz set himself up as a vocalist in the growing underground music scene of Newcastle and became resident at most of the Drum and Bass club nights. In September 2000 he began collecting elements to build up his own home studio setup and with the help of Mala (Craggz and Parallel Forces) and Alan Clarke (Elementz of Noise), he began to combine the DnB with with his earlier musical interest....... Rock/Grunge. As James Hadfield he recorded a track named "Your Isolation" with Craggz and Parallel forces that was released on their album through Valve records and featured on Playstation game Fifa Street 2.
After a while the Drum and Bass genre became a little too formulated for The Onaz and other forms of urban music became more apparent, influential artists 4hero appeared to have moved on, as had Hidden Agenda and artists such as Morgan Geist, Carl Craig and Jazzanova were writing music with an intensity he found far more appealing.
These days The Onaz mainly subscribes to NuDisco music influenced by Emperor Machine, Lindstrom and Prins Thomas however, his production of the form is more minimal. This sound combines the deep electronic disco stylings of Lindstrom, Prins Thomas et al with the edgy techtronics and beat trickery of Seiji and the west London mob. Resulting in a deep, minimal edgy dancefloor led sound.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we're very proud to welcome Poussez to Universal Vibes.
Poussez is the electronic bastard child of London based producer/dj duo Jafar and Maxime Cescau. Established artists and record label directors in their own right (Jafar ofcourse popping up on a few of our previous releases); Jafar & Touch, Jafar & Bobby Strobe, Poetiquette, Rare Unit and Artizan Music in the case of Jafar;
Tonrausch, Toastburglar, Waxjakkers, Ewok and 4bit Art&Music in the case of Maxime Cescau. Poussez brings the pair blasting through to House music'S cutting edge in the 21st Century. We had to pick up 'The Natural Conditions' E.P in light of the rave reviews and attention the pair have been receiving for their recent output on Blacksoul Music, Sensual Recordings and their own Artizan and 4bit imprints.
Poussez rocked our label launch at Herbal, with a 45 minute live set of their new material(check the radio section at universalvibes.com for an archived version live at neighbourhood). The pair are continuing to change the Deep House formula in the zeroes marrying a more melodic sensibility with the abrasiveness of electro, darkness of minimal and dancefloor punch of techno.
Think Square One, Francois Dubois or Jimpster and you're in Jafar and Maxime's comfort zone. With collaborations forthcoming with Demarkus Lewis, Troydon and Ashley Casselle, remixes of Blacksoul, Rithma and Giom also on the horizon, their fortnightly radio show on SSRadio, monthly Sunday label party 'uptownboogiedown' at the renowned Nottinghill Arts Club, their increasingly
popular live sets and a hectic worldwide tour schedule, expect to hear even more about Poussez in 2008. For further info please consult www.poussez.co.uk
The EP:
'Tell me how you do'
From its opening synths, deliciously washing over you like an incoming electronic tidal wave, 'Tell me How you do' grabs the listeners attention.
It has that timeless mid 90s deep house feel without being outmoded and, for those paying attention, will be noted as Poussez's trademark opening track on their live sets. Think Schmoov, Rhythm Plate or Crazy P, a warm bassline is peppered by electronics and complemented by more gorgeous synths, vocal snippets and bleeps, this is melodic lushness at its finest.
'Natural Conditions'
Deeper than the proverbial abyss, 'Natural conditions' rocks a skankin square-bass around the sort of synths Freerange's 'Square One' has become renowned for. This track clearly demonstrates Jafar and Maxime's understanding of space, the beats are firing whilst still allowing plenty of breathing room for synth stabs and a booming sub at the tracks commencement. Follow the track along and the pads continually metamorphasize, always keeping the interest going. 4am crowd grabbing deepness.
For this release we welcome Tim Scott back to the label and revisit the second release (Tim’s Season Of Change ep). Season of Change part 2 features two new tracks as well as 3 remixes from the first ep
First up, new track BST sees Tim in a disco/house frame of mind, creating a warm chugging groove full of smooth Rhodes keys, arpeggiated synths and choppy guitars over a solid boogie drum pattern. The second new track, diagonally is a downtempo track with Tim’s distinct sound coming right through, part Balearic, part urban groove over heavy beats.
Season Of Change was the lead track on the first EP, a warm, beat driven vocal piece of quality soulful music. Featuring the vocal talents of Neve, over Tim’s bumping beats, aimed squarely at the dancefloor, here it gets 2 heavy remixes. First up Tim himself gives the track a full broken beat dub treatment, chopping the vocal and sitting it behind electronic synths and the kind of heavy beats and basslines that would fit right in at Co-op. Next up Chris Barker steps up and turns the track into a cosmic-bruk-funk stepper. Chris Barker makes heavy broken beat and house bangers. Although a relatively new producer to the scene, he has DJ’d at heavyweight institutions like Chibuku Shake Shake and Jigsaw Music. He also works alongside Si Murray (Cronk Family Enterprises) on material, some of which is bringing on support from major underground players like Still Music.
Finally, label head Paddy Freeform turns in a remix of Slowburner under his Soulphonic production alias. He takes the midtempo disco infused groove, ups the tempo and dubs it right out before overlaying warm synths and 4/4 tech beats to drag the track into a darker corner of the dancefloor
We're swinging right back to the left for the next release on Universal Vibes, as we welcome Surra to make his debut on the label
Surra is an up-and-coming London based DJ, producer and remixer. He has collaborated and remixed the likes of Jeremy Ellis, Max Cole, Spengler, Altered Native(s)and Dogdaze on labels such as Amalgama, Other Worlds, Eye 4 Eye and Beyondjazz. His music has seen worldwide airplay and support from the likes of Benji B, Nick Weston and Kev Beadle.
Dropping three tunes for the digital release first up we have the deep hypnotic downbeat vibes of Diotima, which pricked up ears when it was released as part of the label sampler..
2,3,4 is a piece of bouncing broken soul, here in its instrumental version (a vocal version is in production and will feature on the vinyl release, which is forthcoming in the next few months)
The ep is closed off with futural, a blissed out instrumental piece that hypnostises and soothes the soul, and shows off Surra's musical ear, label head Paddy Freeform is currently working on a remix stretching it out and throwing it around a house/broken/boogie framework, again this will appear on the vinyl release and promos will be available soon.
Next up on Universal Vibes, Jafar once again steps up to the plate after gracing us with the first release, to deliver a more tech edged two tracker, this time in collaboration with Bobby Strobe.
We're back on a house tip for UV003, both tracks are on the deep house tip and will appeal to fans of the Freerange/Buzzin Fly sound, deep and electronic house music with soul.
Kicking off with 'Keeps Coming', an incessant vocal chant urges on the groove which builds throughout the track til the 303 bass lifts it up and twists it into oblivion.
Latin shades takes a more subtle approach, raw and punchy, sounding a bit like a new jersey track from way back when updated for the naughties, the groove builds and builds with little brass stabs and string flourishes keeping the interest going strong til the end of the track
This is peak time dancefloor grooviness at its finest and any fans of Tony Thomas, Slam, Mr G, Asad Rizvi, Halo Varga, Funk DaVoid or Silicone Soul should check this.
The Universal Vibes label steams ahead with the second release, from Liverpool beatsmith Tim Scott. 'Season Of Change' is a warm, beat driven vocal piece, call some like to call it broken beat, some like to call it leftfield, we just like to call it quality soulful music. Featuring the vocal talents of Neve, over Tim's bumping beats, it's a warm and soulful sound that's aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Appearing here in both vocal and instrumental versions ...
The song is backed up with 'Slowburner' a midtempo, disco infused bomb featuring a live bass and filtered guitars and effects, the track bounces along on a solid chunky groove that bumps and swings. The track has a certain scando/Balearic flavour that will sit well in a variety of DJ sets.
Artizan Music's resident dj/production duo Jafar & Andy 'Touch'fingers follow up their recent club smash on Hustle Music 'Desertlands' which featured the renowned vocal talents of Marcus Begg, with this little beauty....
'Don't rush to find love' features Andy's younger sister; jazz singer Liz Baddaley. Its a deep, heartfelt song that we can all relate to and clearly shows the music that flows deep through the veins of the baddaley family! Liz speaks of when you want to love someone so much that you just rush in at the first opportunity that comes your way, she tells us all to keep a cool head and take our time, dont get into a relationship with the wrong person just for the sake of having someone, better to wait for the right person, its all very poignant stuff without being cliched.
Jafar andTouch's production is warm and deep whilst still retaining a dancefloor edge. This debut release for Universal Vibes is the first of several projects forthcoming from the pair. Their 'What is Love?' and 'Prelude' releases are scheduled for September. You can also look out for studio versions of their 8 piece band Poetiquette kicking about on Yam Who's Urban Safari label plus Jafar's alterego with Rob Stow and Maxime Cescau as 'Jafar & Bobby Strobe' and 'Poussez' respectively forthcoming on Blacksoul Music, 4bit, Artizan and of course Universal Vibes. For further info please check out www.artizanmusic.co.uk
Stepping up on Remix duty, is Simon Finnegan and Maaga Marcus aka ToneControl. Best known for their deep house and nu-disco label of the same name, Tonecontrol follow recent releases on Grab Recordings with this groovy take on Don't Rush, pushing the song in a tracky vein not a million miles from the Rurals.
